Boat Launch Improvements: Prelude Lake and Prosperous Lake
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedinEmail this link
This engagement has concluded
What is this engagement about?
With fluctuating water levels and increased usage, the Prelude and Prosperous Boat Launches are in need of replacement.
How was engagement gathered?
Two public meetings were held on September 13, 2018 from 1215-1pm and 5:15 to 6pm for residents, members of the public, and any other stakeholders to share their feedback on preliminary plans.
Those who could not attend were encouraged to email the GNWT's Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment - North Slave Region with any questions, clarifications, or comments.
How were participants made informed and aware?
A short background information item was shared on the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment's website and distributed via social media, newspaper and social media advertisement, direct outreach to known stakeholders, and at the engagement sessions themselves.
Summary of findings
In the Q+A bar, you can find a summary of key areas of inquiry which arose in submissions, and the Department's response to each of them.
What's Next?
The Department has collected feedback for consideration as the project moves to the design phase. New drawings will be shared once they are available to inform those interested ahead of the construction process.

Prelude Lake — Leave a space at the end of the breakwater to the side of the boat launch ramp to allow access for vehicles collecting drinking water.
Raised by: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
The Department will consider this suggestion and present for the new design.

Prelude Lake — Look at making a single ramp boat launch at the end of the breakwater with the dock angled to provide shelter from winds.
Raised by: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
The Department will consider this option and present to design team to address the large
turnaround space.

Prelude Lake — Add a dock alongside of the break water, eliminate parking on the breakwater to allow for loading and unloading.
Raised by: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
This
suggestion will be considered in the design phase.

Prelude Lake — Refurbish current boat launch and docks, extending one of the docks further out to provide more space for loading/unloading.
Raised by: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
This
is an option the Department would present during the design phase.

Prelude Lake — Can a pipe for drinking water be installed?
Raised by: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
A
water pipe is not an option as it would freeze in the winter and the Department could not
be responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of this type of water
source.

Prelude Lake — Is expanding the marina an option?
Raised by: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
The
marina just underwent a costly renovation and the Department has no plans to spend more on
an expansion.

Prelude Lake — Existing boat launch and parking just needs to be policed.
Raised by: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
The Department can place clearer signage so people know to not tie up the launch area.
Enforcement can be increased to address parking lot issues.

Prelude Lake — In winter time, people drive down the small boat ramp at the end of the breakwater to get onto the lake and ice roads.
Raised by: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
There
are other access points that can be looked at for winter. Perhaps removing some
of the rock barriers to allow snow machines and vehicles alternate access.

Prelude Lake — The turn around will have to be too big at the end of the breakwater to accommodate trucks, boats and trailers. The beach area may be encroached on.
Raised By: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
The design team will determine what size of turnaround is
necessary and what infrastructure will fit in the area. Mock ups are based on a
truck, trailer and 24’ boat.
The beach area is important and will be
preserved.

Prelude Lake — Drinking water quality may be bad during construction with lake water being stirred up.
Raised by: Prelude Residents and Cabin Owners
over 3 years ago
The piles will need to be installed with equipment on the
ice, so piles will not be installed until the ice is thick enough. At this time
residents can drive further out on the lake to retrieve water.
